In Kogi State on Tuesday, a group of passionate youths took to the streets in protest against the looming arrest of former governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of alleged N80.2 billion fraud.

Under the banner of the Coalition of Civil Society for Democracy and Africa Youths Coalition for Justice, these youths gathered in solidarity, blocking the Lokoja-Abuja Road and causing a significant traffic snarl on the federal highway. Brandishing banners emblazoned with messages like “President Tinubu, call EFCC to order,” “EFCC stop witch hunting,” and “Yahaya Bello remains a responsible citizen,” they made their voices heard.

Addressing the press in Lokoja, Richard Otitoleke, the Convener of the coalition, articulated their stance, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the rule of law and democratic principles.

“We stand here today to voice our concerns regarding the ongoing clash between the EFCC and former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State. This issue has garnered significant attention in recent days, and we firmly believe that the EFCC, as an institution established by the laws of our nation, must operate within the confines of those laws. The rule of law is the cornerstone of any democratic society.

“There exists a court order—an interim restraining order from a competent jurisdiction—explicitly prohibiting the invitation, arrest, or prosecution of the former governor pending the resolution of matters pertaining to his human rights. It is imperative that the EFCC adheres to this order. Nigeria is not a lawless state; disobedience to court orders undermines the very fabric of our democracy. We cannot allow our country to descend into chaos. I trust that our President is committed to upholding the rule of law and fairness, not engaging in witch hunts.”
