Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has emphatically reinforced the ban on open grazing within the state, reiterating that any transgressors will be held accountable under the full extent of the law.
During an interactive session on the Edo State Regional Development and Benin City Master Plan held in Iguobazuwa, Ovia South-West Local Government Area, the Governor emphasized the need for adherence to this policy. He underscored that herders seeking to establish ranches must engage with local communities and acquire land legitimately.
Governor Obaseki articulated, “Any herdsman found in our forests without proper authorization is violating state law, and they will bear the consequences of their actions without recourse to blame-shifting.”
He further clarified, “It is imperative that we are informed of any presence of herders in our forests. Open grazing is unequivocally prohibited in Edo State. If herders are discovered within your vicinity, inform us promptly, and we will take appropriate action with the assistance of law enforcement and local vigilantes.”
Addressing the issue of land use, the Governor stressed the importance of conducting business transactions with landowners rather than encroaching on forested areas unlawfully. He emphasized, “They should engage in commerce with our communities and refrain from indiscriminate trespassing in our forests. These lands belong to us, the people of Edo State.”
In conclusion, Governor Obaseki reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enforcing the ban on open grazing and urged all stakeholders to cooperate in ensuring its implementation for the collective benefit of the state and its residents.
