Former Imo State governorship candidate under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emeka Ihedioha, has made the decision to step away from the party, citing its failure to provide effective opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Ihedioha formally communicated his resignation through a letter dated April 23, addressed to the PDP chairman of Mbutu ward in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, as well as to the National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
In his letter, Ihedioha expressed his disillusionment with the party’s current direction, stating that despite his longstanding commitment to the PDP since 1998, recent developments have led him to believe that the party no longer aligns with his principles. He lamented the party’s inability to conduct internal reforms, uphold its own regulations, or present a formidable challenge to the APC.
Reflecting on his years of service and dedication to the PDP, Ihedioha acknowledged the party’s historic role in providing credible leadership, both in and out of power. However, he highlighted a significant departure from these values in recent times, prompting his decision to resign.
Although acknowledging the difficulty of his choice, Ihedioha affirmed his belief that leaving the PDP was the right course of action. His departure marks the end of a chapter in his political journey, one that began with his election as Governor of Imo State in March 2019, only to be overturned by the Supreme Court in January 2020, which declared Hope Uzodinma as the rightful winner of the election.
